How to Add a Second Gmail Account (Computer, iPhone and Android)

Many people keep more than one Gmail account, such as one for work and one for personal mail. Adding a second account lets you read both inboxes without signing out each time. The steps are quick on a computer, an iPhone or an Android phone. This guide shows each one, and how to switch between accounts afterward.

1. Open Gmail and Click Your Profile Picture

Step 1: click the circle in the top right of your inbox.

On a computer, go to mail.google.com and sign in to your first account. Look at the top right corner of the page and click your profile picture or initial. A small menu opens showing the account you are using now.

2. Click Add Another Account

Step 2: choose Add another account from the menu.

At the bottom of the menu, click Add another account. If you do not see the option, scroll down inside the menu. A new sign-in window or tab opens so you can enter the details of your second account.

3. Sign In to the Second Account

Step 3: enter the second account’s email address and password.

Type the email address of the second account and click Next, then enter its password. Complete any verification step Google asks for, such as a code on your phone. When you finish, the second inbox opens in a new tab and your first account stays signed in.

4. Switch Between Accounts on Your Computer

Step 4: click either account to open its inbox.

Click your profile picture again. You will see both accounts listed. Click either one to open its inbox. Each account opens in its own tab, which makes it easy to keep work and personal mail apart. Use Sign out of all accounts if you want to start over, then sign back in with only the account you need.

5. Add an Account in the iPhone Gmail App

Step 7: tap the account you want to open.

In the Gmail app, tap your profile picture. Your accounts appear in a list, and tapping one opens its inbox. Unread counts may appear next to each account. Use the account switcher before you send an email so it goes out from the correct address.

Tips for Using Two Accounts

Keep a strong, different password for each account and turn on 2-Step Verification for both. If you share a computer, use a private window or a separate browser profile so your accounts do not mix with other people’s. If one account will not sign in, see our guides on Gmail login not working and Gmail password reset.
